Talent Isn’t Essential, Hard Work and Determination Are!

There once was a guy who did extremely badly at school. He was failing almost all his courses and wanted to drop out. However, he had promised his mother to take the SAT so he took it. He went into the exam thinking that he would fail. Despite his low expectations and usual poor performance, he actually had scored 1480 out of 1600. Just because of this score the guy decided to continue school and worked very hard for the rest of his high school years. After graduating from an Ivy League school and becoming an amazing entrepreneur, he found out that his actual SAT score was 740. He was never actually "smart" but it was hard work and GRIT that helped him get to where he is. This is what Angela Lee was explaining in her TED Talk. There is no need for talent because it does not guarantee success. It's passion and determination that will lead anyone to success in life.

Angela explains that no matter the IQ success is possible as long as it is driven with hard work. She proves this by giving an example of the students she taught. She had said that those with high IQs were not necessarily doing well, while those with lower IQs were preforming splendidly. This is because the effort put in is what gave results. Thus, its natural that those who do not put effort, no matter how smart, will get poor results. This theory reminded me of what Tim Notke had once stated, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." It means that even if someone is talented it will not matter without hard work. Therefore, I agree with what Angela had said about GRIT being the main reason of success.

  2. I like how you mentioned the story of the boy who believed that he was smart and he actually put the work in and started getting very good grades. Since believing in yourself is a big part of working hard and knowing that you've got skills to work hard.
